FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Moving a domain, secondary DNS, DNSSEC, the API and what happens if you leave.

Questions

The ones we actually get asked.

  • How long does moving a domain to CTPFDNS take? The zone is built and checked here first, which takes as long as your zone is complicated — usually the same day. The delegation switch at the registrar is the last step, and once it is made the change is visible as the old TTLs expire.
  • Will my domain go down during the move? No. We never switch the delegation before our nameservers already answer the domain correctly. Both sides serve the same records during the changeover.
  • Can I keep my current provider as the primary?Yes. We can run as secondary and carry your zone by AXFR while your primary stays where it is. Publish our nameservers in the delegation and allow transfers to them.
  • Do you charge per record or per query? No. A zone is a zone. We do not meter records or queries.
  • Is DNSSEC available? It is being rolled out. No domain is signed yet, because zones are still being moved off the old provider. Once a domain has completed its move, its zone is signed and the DS record is published at the registrar.
  • Can I use my own nameserver names? On request. Your names, for example ns1.yourdomain.tld, point at our machines and we set the glue records with you when the delegation is prepared.
  • How fast is a change live?Between our nameservers, within seconds — the primary sends a NOTIFY and the secondaries transfer immediately. What the rest of the world sees depends on the TTL of the record you changed.
  • Why do you check at a secondary and not at the primary?Because the primary accepting a change proves nothing about what resolvers get. If the serial did not rise, the secondaries ignore the change and the world keeps the old answer.
  • Do you offer an API?Yes. Everything the panel can do is available programmatically with a token, so zone changes can run from your own automation.
  • What happens to my zone if I leave? You export it and take it with you. There is no lock-in and no export fee.
  • Who do I talk to when something is wrong? The people who run the nameservers. Write to us with the domain and what you are seeing; every zone also carries dnsmaster@ctpfdns.com as its SOA contact, and that mailbox is read.
  • Do you register domains? Not yet. Registration and transfers are being set up as their own service under cdpdomain.com. Until then we work with the registrar you already use.
