What is a TXT record?

The TXT record holds free text. In practice it carries the policies that keep mail and certificates honest.

Originally meant for arbitrary notes, TXT is now the transport for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TLSRPT and countless domain-ownership proofs.

A single name may hold several TXT records, but only one SPF record is permitted per name. Two SPF records mean neither of them applies.

Long values are split into 255-character chunks inside the record; that is a format detail, not two separate values.

Because verification tokens tend to accumulate here, TXT is worth cleaning up once a year — expired proofs are clutter that hides real problems.
