What is an SRV record?

The SRV record publishes where a specific service runs: its host, its port, and how requests should be distributed.

The name encodes service and protocol, for example _sip._tcp.example.com. The value carries priority, weight, port and target host.

Priority works like MX: lower first. Weight distributes traffic between targets that share a priority.

The target must be a hostname with an address record, not an address and not a CNAME.

SRV is used by SIP, XMPP, LDAP, Minecraft and mail autodiscovery, among others.
